With digital photography now the norm and everyone taking photos with their phones, I’m happy that Instagram uses the square format that I used to shoot with my Bronica 6×6 camera.
Back in the film days, I’d shoot everything with 2 1/4 by 2 1/4 inch square medium format film on my Bronica. It was a different feeling. Not only did I have to wait for a day to get my film back from the lab to see how everything turned out, but the roll of film had only 12 photos on it. So, when shooting, I’d be changing film constantly. I loved it and medium format worked great especially for portraits. Photographing skateboarding with a medium format camera was especially great because you could get super low to the ground and still see the photo through the top down view finder. Also, my Bronica has a super fast flash sync speed of 1/500th compared to more digital cameras today of only 1/250 or less.
This is a photo from my family Netherlands trip to Amsterdam. I’m not sure what the tower in the background is, but I decided to crop it square. Not every shot works square format, but the crop focused more on the tower while leaving the interesting foreground of the man sitting on the stoop.
